Abstract: The late stage actor and drama teacher Richard Hughes has bequeathed the proceeds from the sale of his 83-year-old home in Clovelly to the Starlight Children's Foundation.

The three-bedroom home at 24 Park St will be auctioned on Aug. 5 with a guide price of $3.3 million.

"Richard's donation of the auction proceeds to a charity that provides help to sick children is a great testament to the person he was," Dueza said.

"Richard was a generous and selfless man, and his bequest is sure to keep his fun-loving and caring nature alive.

Richard died at the end of 2022 at the age of 77. In the 1960s he performed at the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli, where Lorraine Bayly from The Sullivans was a founding member.

Hughes' parents Dick and Beryl bought the semi-residential area of Clovelly in 1940 for a few hundred pounds and Richard grew up there, enjoying views of Coogee and Wedding Cake Island, a stone's throw from Clovelly beach.

Richard was an only child, his father, Dick, was a glass blower and his mother, Beryl, was a champion lawn bowler and longtime member of Clovelly Bowling Club.

Richard's extended family included grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who also lived in the area, and Richard enjoyed the freedom of a typical 1950s suburban Australian childhood, exploring the local area and going to the beach with his cousins.

Richard is remembered as a crotchety old boy who, according to his cousin Ray Gillies, "always amazed, amused and surprised people.

He often seemed to play a part in his own plays - his conversations were full of puns and jokes, sometimes clever, but usually corny.

After a career as a stage actor and drama teacher, Richard retired to focus once again on his family.

Together with his partner of over 40 years, Barry, Richard lovingly cared for his mother, Beryl, and his aunt, June, for many years until their deaths in their 90s.

He also organized regular family gatherings, bringing together cousins he may have lost touch with for picnics in Centenary Park and many other places in Sydney.

Dueza said: "The property is the perfect family getaway with serene views and an abundance of character.

"One thing is for sure: acquisition opportunities like this with such a beautiful view at a tight address don't come along every day."

Practical single-story floor plan with period details, wood floors, high ceilings and picture hanging railings.

A tidy kitchen, casual living room, and three double bedrooms add to its appeal.

Seriously ill hospitalized children often feel fearful, nervous and isolated during their treatment. Starlight's vital hospital programs, including Captain Starlight and Starlight Express Ward, provide a medically free haven for sick children and their families, giving them the opportunity to play, laugh and connect as a family, and giving them precious moments of joy during their hospital stay.

This year, the Starlight program expects to see almost 3,200 visits per month to the Starlight Express Unit at every children's hospital in NSW, including Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick.

Captain Starlight will also visit nearly 5,000 seriously ill children in NSW hospital wards each month.
