According to CoreLogic, the six-bedroom, six-bathroom Georgian house has been on the market for more than 1,100 days, including the most recent 425 days, since they paid $15 million for it in 2009.
A sale is possible in late 2021 and the deposit has been banked, but a conditional sale has failed to proceed. There is also a silly marketing attempt on Luxe Listings Sydney.
Built in 1871, this Edmund Blackett-designed Macleay St residence features sandstone foundations, 4m high ceilings, projecting windows, French oak parquetry, an Australian cedar staircase and 11 white Carrera marble fireplaces. It was built for the Hordern retail family.
The third floor was built in 1881 by another distinguished architect, Thomas Rohrga.
There is a gymnasium, a cellar and parking for 10 cars, but no swimming pool on the rear lawn.
Sam Schumann of Raine and Horne Unlimited has given a guide price of $34 million based on the sale of nearby Bomera to billionaire steel miner Sanjeev Gupta in 2019 for $34 million.
Schumann has set a date of April 4 for the auction of the 1,900 square metre property above Garden Island. It was one of five naval properties sold by the Ministry of Defence in the area in the late 1990s, including Tresco on the Elizabeth Bay waterfront, for $9 million.
